  Kelis

  Kelis Rogers-Jones (born Kelis Rogers on August 21, 1979), is known simply by her first name Kelis (pronounced Kuh-lees). Her name is an amalgamation of her parents first names, her Black father Kenneth and Puerto Rican/Chinese mother Eveliss. Growing up in Middle Class Harlem, New York Kelis' childhood was not a deprived one. But she was not without problems, after her parents realised they could not cope with her unruly behaviour (Kelis shaved all her hair off at age 13, soon afterwards dyeing the regrowth the colors of the rainbow), Kelis moved out of the family home, continuing her private education. After a short spell working as a model, 5'10" Kelis began appearing on songs by Neptunes produced rappers such as 'Got Your Money' by the late rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard. Soon afterwards, she released her debut album, Kaleidoscope in 1997 of which the first single was 'Caught Out There,' a song based on the time she caught her boyfriend cheating on her, and she beat him. The video feautures Kelis leading a pack of angry women down the street screaming 'I hate you so much right now!'. The album was released in USA, Europe and Asia, but did not find much audience in the USA. Not a great success, it only sold 249,000 copies to date. After finding her largest audience in Europe, Kelis released her second album titled Wanderland (2001) in Europe only, which like her first album did not fare well. It only sold 80,000 copies and was entirely produced by The Neptunes (Pharrell and Chad Hugo) again, similairly to her debut. Singles released were 'Young Fresh N New', 'Get Even' and 'Popular Thug' of which there are two official versions one featuring Nas and one feauturing Pusha T of Clipse. In 2003 Kelis finally found fame in her country with the single 'Milkshake,' which was a massive success in Europe, Asia and USA, and she began dating rapper Nas (born Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones). The single was from the album 'Tasty' which did not feature the Neptunes as heavily as her previous albums. Singles included the popular Dallas Austin produced 'Trick Me' and 'Millionaire', a collaberation with OutKast's Andre 3000. 'In Public'a duet with Nas was the fourth single from the album, becoming a top twenty hit in the U.K. without a video. In 2006, Kelis presented a new album to her fans, entitled Kelis Was Here, which was originally to be called 'The Pupeteer' which was released on 22 August but was due Fall 2005. No Neptunes tracks appeared on this album, but Kelis used other producers such as Max Martin, will.i.am (Black Eyed Peas) and Raphael Saadiq. Singles are the huge 'Bossy', 'Blindfold Me', 'Circus' and 'Lil Star'. Kelis wrote more of the material on this album than she did for Tasty, and carries off the sci-fi, electronica sounds so often considered Neptunes material without them. This is most evident on the brilliant 'Trilogy'. Kelis has said she wants to make her mark with this album, as it will be the last 'album like this' she will make. In October 2007, Kelis was dumped by Jive Records, for poor sales of Kelis Was Here but a new album is in the pipeline. The Hits - a greatest hits collection - was released in March 2008, including tracks where she was a featured artist.

  Folamour

  David Moufang aka Move D is a true pioneer of electronic music. He released on labels like Warp, Reflective, Freundinnen, Compost's Black Label and of course on his own label Source. Originally from Heidelberg Germany, David Moufang spent his childhood listening to the likes of Kraftwerk and Pink Floyd – yet rather than credit these auteurs with the inspiration behind his work, Moufang pinpoints another factor as the core influence to his musical gestation; space. Having been profoundly affected by a trip to the cinema to see ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’, Moufang spent his childhood obsessed with the cosmos – and when the desire to make music eventually took over it’s little wonder that the results incorporated such strong elements of the ethereal and otherworldly. Schooled in classical percussion and with a keen talent for jazz guitar, Moufang was introduced to techno in 1989 by a friend and rapidly began to devour output from 808 State, Nexus 21 and Detroit’s finest – finally releasing his first record alongside Jonas Grossmann as Deep Space Network. By the time his first solo work crept out as part of a Source Records compilation (‘Homeworks’) in 1993, Moufang had already displayed a loose-limbed approach to techno that sent the foundations of Detroit spinning off into a new and laid-back orbit. CCO rereleased his classic album "Kunststoff in 2006. He will release a new album on City Centre Offices in 2007.

  Moodymann

  Moodymann is the moniker under which Kenny Dixon Jr produces and DJs. He is a techno/house musician based in Detroit. He has created a thoroughly hybrid form of techno/house dance music via his innovative use of reworked riffs, samples and grooves taken from that city's historically influential jazz, soul, funk and disco scene. Some call it cut-up Detroit house. He offers a friendly wink backwards at the innovative early 1990s rave scene musicians through his extensive use of old movie sound track samples, mainly culled from the old blaxploitation and b-movie genres. He has been known to DJ behind a screen. He is one of the 3 Chairs.   Theo Parrish

  Theo Parrish grew up on Chicago house parties. He went to art school in Kansas City, and then moved to Detroit. His eclectic DJ sets in Detroit in the late '90s and early in this millennium are legendary. "Love of the music should be the driving force of any producer, performer or DJ. Everything else stems from that core, that love. With that love, sampling can become a tribute; An expansion on ideas long forgotten, reconstruction, collage. Using the same understanding openly and respectfully can turn DJing into a spiritual participation. It can turn a few hours of selection into essential history; Necessary listening through movement." This personal philosophy gives shape and direction to the distinctive sounds that are created by Theo Parrish.
