HI HI HA HA is the bitter, acidic laugh that It It Anita fires back at a news cycle that grows more depressing — even more deadly — by the day. Their fifth album finds the Belgian noise-rock trio darker, tighter, and more on edge than ever, just as we were barely coming down from the carefree, freewheeling energy of Mouche. The mood grows heavier, more anxious. The tone becomes provocative, defiant, razor-sharp. They push into unexplored sonic territory, yet nonchalance and humor still lurk in the shadows, ready to jump out without warning. Michael Goffard, Elliot Stassen, and Bryan Hayart remain at the helm of the raging rock locomotive of the Franco-Belgian scene — one that’s now rolling further and further beyond.
